Bacteria Club: Fermentation workshop

Social Pickle brings people together to share the joys of foraging, pickling and producing

When: Sunday 8th January 2023

Times: Morning session from 10:30 to 12:30

Afternoon session from 1:30 to 3:30

Where: The Confrence Room, Woodend Gallery, The Crescent, Scarborough, YO11 2PW.

In this hands on, sensory and creative workshop we will explore how we live alongside and collaborate with bacteria in every moment and space of our lives.

Fermentation is a process where we are particularly conscious of our role as caretakers to the environment needed by our microbial comrades, in order that they can thrive and in turn help us to fend off mould, transforming ingredients into deliciously sour flavours. Massaging cabbage, the first stage in making the classic sauerkraut, becomes an act of reciprocal care.

What other invisible things make a relationship work? Trust, intuition… when it comes to our meals, we’ve become reliant on labels and sell-by dates to direct us as to what is good and what is bad. And in recent years the very infrastructure of the city has been redesigned in fear of bacteria. But learning to preserve your own food means to sharpen your instincts, getting to know and love the pungent smells of these metabolic processes.

Social Pickle will be sharing lessons in microbial relationship therapy. Together we will get to know our bacteria collaborators through a practical session learning to make sauerkraut. This will be followed by an olfactory and taste based tour of different fermented aromas, flavours and ingredients. Harnessing the emotions and thoughts conjured in the process we will use creative writing to explore this symbiotic relationship further.

This will be a two hour workshop where we will learn fermentation techniques together and enjoy other fermented snacks. Everything will be provided, so you can just turn up and take home a jar of sauerkraut.

About Social Pickle

Social Pickle brings people together to share the joys of foraging, pickling and producing. Harnessing the seasons and the surplus of Sheffield, they channel the flavours of the city and share it out in jar-sized portions. Social Pickle explores fermentation as a human and non-human collaborative process, seeking to create better access to nutritious food and create less damaging practices to the planet. The process is one of shared learning, and they see it as a space for community members to empower each other through knowledge and build resilience.
