de/composition is an expansion of new ideas in the form of a conversation about the environmental impact of modern photographic techniques. This is something which the sustainable darkroom addresses through critical research, mutual learning radical reformation.
The exhibition complements the current photographic exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery, which explores historic Pictorialism and Analogue photography.
The exhibition brings together a group of artists who are connected to the Sustainable Darkroom, which was set up in 2019 by artist Hannah Fletcher to address the future of sustainable photographic methods. The group has grown massively since running successful workshops, residencies, and publications, championing the need for a change in photographic making that has been long overdue.
Sections of the Woodend Gallery now imitate a pastiche of a darkroom, not only to provoke questions of how we can incorporate characteristics of functional working space in what can be a refractory place to work in; but also serves the practical purpose of protecting the artworks, some of which are light sensitive from the natural qualities which they are made from.
The artists in this exhibition include Ed Carr, Martha Cattell, Alice Cazenave, Michaela Davidova, Hannah Fletcher and James Sewell.
With kind thanks to Helen Donnelly, Tim Knight, Jamie Burns and The Sustainable Darkroom for all their support.
de/composition is a collaboration between Crescent Arts and The Sustainable Darkroom. Supported by Arts Council England and Scarborough Museums and Galleries.
