Workshop with Sam Metz and the Coastal North Fellowship
A rundown on our session and workshop with the Coastal North Fellowship, with visiting speaker Sam Metz and guest artist David Cleary
Our session with the Fellowship began with an introduction to the disability rights movement from curator Sam Metz, followed by talks of social models of disability and crip theory. Together everyone created a social story for Woodend, whilst proposing a set of access adjustments for a hypothetical art event, and discussed artist’s access riders. David led a series of exercises on writing artist statements and proposals, with the group working together to generate a set of materials for future applications.
This included everyone listening to each other describe their practices, writing key words and short statements for each other and matching the written words to images of their work. The group talked a lot about how to be clear, confident and complex in their written applications, different approaches to programming, how to support each other, working in non-extractive ways with groups, embedding access into everything we do, and principles for collaboration.
